History of the Washington Monument

Washington Monument
The equestrian statue of Washington is perched on top of a monument conceived as a glorification of an idea. Virginia's role in the Revolution is exemplified in this monument, with allegorical figures depicting their individual contributions. They are:

  • Andrew Lewis - Colonial Times
  • Thomas Jefferson - Independence
  • Patrick Henry - Revolution
  • Thomas Nelson - Finance
  • George Mason - Bill of Rights
  • John Marshall - Justice

The sculptors were Thomas Crawford and Randolph Rogers. It is 60 feet high, made of bronze, and weighs 18 tons.

The statue was displayed in Rome, Italy, in 1856, after which it was pulled across the Alps to Munich, Germany, for casting. It was then loaded on a barge and floated down the Rhine River to Amsterdam. It was shipped to Richmond, arriving November 7, 1857. It was then dragged from the 17th Street docks to Capitol Square. The statue was erected February 12, 1858, and unveiled 10 days later.
