Gathering place at Staples Mill

Over the years, Staples Mill became a business and social gathering place. People met beside the tranquil Mill Pond to trade and visit while their corn was being ground. They spoke of topics that effected lives at that time. They spoke of the coming War from the North and of the new Confederacy of Southern States.

And the Staples Mill Stone continued to turn.

Sumter was fired upon by South Carolina Militia,

Mississippi, Florida, Virginia joined the Confederacy

Lee, Jackson and Stuart will prevail !

Will the War never end -

RICHMOND HAS FALLEN !

Time passed -- After the War, Major A. R. Courtney purchased the Staples Plantation, Land, Mill, and Pond and renamed it Dumbarton range.

Dumbarton originated with Dumbarton Castle in Scotland.  Dumbarton Castle sits on the twin peaks of White Tower Crag and The Beak where the River Clyde meets River Leven near Dumbarton, West Dumbartonshire, Scotland.

The great hero of Scotland, William Wallace, also known as Braveheart, was  betrayed and captured at Robroyston near Glasgow, on 3rd August 1305. He was taken first to Dumbarton Castle, where his sword was left behind, then he was taken south to London.

"Staples Mill" fell into disuse.

Wagons enroute to John's Mill traveled from the Broad Street, north over the Staples Mill Road and visitors to the Grange traveled on the Dumbarton Road as they do today.

The Hilliard Road to Mr. Hilliard's house near Brook Turnpike continued west almost to the railroad tracks before turning south [called Impala Dr. today] and exiting near John Staple's Mill at Dumbarton Road.

A. R. Courtney's Uncle once owned an estate in Scotland named Dumbarton.
