Sons of Confederate Veterans

The sons of the Confederate veterans in Richmond

"General Lee! Say the word and we'll go after them again. General, we'll fight them - General, let us loose and we'll come back and fight them again." - Appomattox, Virginia 1865.

One can understand their passion if you realize these boys are indeed the descendent family line great, great, grand sons of the original Confederate Soldiers that fought to protect their families and land of the South.

The old veterans at the Soldier's Home on the Boulevard in Richmond had little to do to while away the hours. Here we see one of their favorite pasttimes.

I need not tell the rest - you know what happened when he was cross the stream and went through the ranks of those men of the Confederate Army, many requiring medical care, many without shoes and hungry, wearing ragged clothes. They somehow sensed the fact that he had surrendered the Army. "General Lee," they said, "are we surrendered?" some said, "General, say the word and we'll go after them again. General, we'll fight them - General, let us loose and we'll come back and fight them again."

He rode on - how he kept tears from his eyes I know not, but he said, "Men I've done the best for you I know how to do." He, on Traveller, rode home to Richmond.
