Lady Wonder Is a Phenomenon, Says Psychologist - February 24, 1946Lady Wonder, the Petersburg Pike mind-reading horse, yesterday was called "a genuine phenomenon" by a visiting psychologist, Dr. Thomas L. Garrett. Dr. Garrett, a native Richmonder, who is living in New York, is editor-in-chief of a monthly psychology digest, "Your Mind," which is to be published here. With him was Lesley Kuhn, managing editor of the magazine. The two men, who said they had exposed many mind-reading and fortune-telling acts in the country, were obviously impressed by the 21-year-old horse who spells out the answers to questions.
Garden Week Offers Visitors Beauty, History and Romance - April 18, 1948TWENTY-SIX historic homes, gardens and Colonial churches, in addition to several groups of modern gardens which were not open for the 1947 Garden Week, will welcome visitors to continue through May 1, according to Mrs. C. Braxton Valentine, general chairman for the Garden Club of Virginia, which is responsible for the " Week."
Caution is the Best Policy for "Old Mutual" - October 9, 1949"Old Mutual" surveyors, then and now, conduct meticulous inspections of property to be insured. Dwellings must be constructed mostly of brick and stone. The company will not write insurance at all in some sections of Richmond, but in others, every house in a block will merit a policy. Reports of these inspections, complete with sketches, have been a gold mine of information to historians, who pored over them until the company had microfilms made and placed in the State library. Architects reconstructing Colonial Williamsburg copied dimensions of building after building from these records.
Art's Tribute to Valor - October 14, 1949In a quiet lecture room on Midlothian Pike is the only memorial portrait gallery of its kind in the United States. Located in the headquarters building of the Department of State Police, it is dedicated to those troopers who sacrificed their lives in the service of Virginia and the nation.
You've Missed the Last Trolley - November 27, 1949Richmond's long boast that this city had the first commercial electric streetcar line in America is purely historical now that the trolley cars have made their final runs to the barns--and oblivion. The electric street railway industry was born in Richmond only 62 years ago. At the rate of transition to buses and other forms of trackless transportation here and elsewhere it is doubtful if the once potent industry will reach man's alloted life span of three score and 10.
