The land of Chief Wahunsonacock, also known as Chief Powhatan, the father of Matoaka, (born c. 1595 in Werawocomoco in Virginia) also know as Pocahontas, the wife of John Rolfe in 1614.

Powhatan Hill, later know as Chimborazo Hill was the site of the 40 acre Confederate Hospital during the War of Northern Aggression 1861-1865. Chimborazo Hill was named after a South American volcano.
