Captain John Smith

 

Captain John Smith

Captain John Smith is best known for his excellent leadership in the Virginia colony's early years. Captain Smith and Christopher Newport landed at a area on the James River later called Rocketts Landing, Port Mayo and Fulton in Richmond and encountered Chief Powhatan and Pocahontas his daughter. Smith says of Pocahontas that she "hazarded the beating out of her owne braines to save mine." On September 10, 1608, Smith became president of the council in the colony.

Arthur Godfrey, K4LIB, lived in northern Virginia and was the Master of Ceremonies at the dedication of Byrd Field Airport Terminal Building in 1950.
