John Stewart Bryan

John Stewart Bryan served as a lieutenant-commander, intelligence, in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War I. He was the publisher of the Times-Dispatch and the News Leader newspapers. He also held distinguished positions at the College of William and Mary, Harvard University, University of Richmond, Episcopal High School in Richmond, and the Richmond Public Library Board. He was also founder and president of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and President of the Virginia Historical Society.

John Stewart Bryan was Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman's mentor.

A. H. Plecker

 

A.H. Plecker

A.H. Plecker is best known for his portraits of Confederate Army officers, many of which are displayed at the Valentine Museum in Richmond. In 1866, Plecker photographed Robert E. Lee on his horse, Traveller. Plecker passed away at the Old Soldier's Home in Richmond, on Jan. 19, 1929.
