PocahontasHer real name was Matoaka; the daughter of Chief Wahunsonacock, called Chief Powhatan by the white man, ruler of the land that the English named Virginia. "Pocahontas" was her childhood nickname, translated "little wanton," meaning she was playful and hard to control. Matoaka was born in Werawocomoco (what is now Wicomico, Gloucester County, Virginia) around the year 1595. |
