Joseph Jefferson

 

Joseph Jefferson

Joseph Jefferson, the most popular and respected American comedian of the nineteenth century, was most well known for his starring role in Rip Van Winkle.

Born into a theatre family, he made his acting debut at the age of four.

Last survivor of the Battle of New Market, VA.

William M. Wood was a lad of 19 when he marched the 82 miles from Lexington to New Market with 247 teenaged children to participate in the battle in which the VMI Cadets Corps contributed materially to the Confederate victory. Cadet Wood fought shoulder to shoulder with veteran troops and went against 6,500 Union Regulars to repell an invasion of the Shenandoah Valley on May 15, 1864.
