Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass were written for a real live Alice. Her name was Liddell, and her father was a college professor; Another college professor, whose name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was teacher of mathematics in the same college--the University of Oxford, in England.

Sir John Tenniel RI (1820-1914). Cartoonist and illustrator. Famous for his Punch Cartoons and illustrations and also as the illustrator of Lewis Carrolls Alice Books (Alices Adventures in Wonderland (1866) and Through the Looking Glass (1872) ) amongst others. Examples of his work can be found in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

He wrote these wonder-stories about Alice for Alice under the name of "Lewis Carroll," and that is the name by which he is known to the million and more children who have read his delightful accounts of Alice's marvelous adventures.
